Overall Course Reflection

I have to say, I can’t believe this year is over.  I don’t know about you guys but it went by SO fast for me.  This class made my freshman year experience pretty awesome.  I learned about a lot of different resources offered to us, like the one-button room and the library research resources!  And I definitely became more confident in my writing.  Coming in to this year I was scared of writing papers because I’ve just never been that good at it.  But now, after writing these blogs every week and the variety of papers that I’ve written throughout this course, I feel 100 times more confident in my writing skills.

Here is a list of things I liked about this course and why:

  1. That it was all year.  I think that it really allowed us to form a relationship with our teacher and our classmates.  It made talking about our ideas and assignments easier because we were comfortable with each other.  It also was nice and made the transition easier to have one class that didn’t change when the new semester started.
  2. Blogging.  I know I, and most of you, complained about blogging at some point throughout this year but overall I think it was a good assignment.  Doing the WIP blog always kept us in-motion and on task.  There was never an assignment that I had to do all in one night because I constantly had to update my progress on the WIP blog.  I think this was beneficial because, as freshman, some of us may have a hard time not procrastinating. The passion blog was fun, sometimes annoying, but mostly fun and easy.  We got to free-write about something that we love, or for others, we got to write about 100 different topics before we figured out what we were passionate about.  But that’s okay!  Which is what I thought was so cool about the passion blog.  And of course the civic issues blog (which is waaaay better than the RCL blog…. Don’t ever bring that back).  I liked this blog because it made us read about current events and then write about them.  I think this is beneficial because a lot of us are living in this ‘state college bubble’ where we don’t really have any worries or cares outside of it.  And having to write about these events made us figure out our opinions on them.  I guess we really are becoming adults now.
  3. The variety of assignments.  We did a rhetorical analysis and the TED talk and the deliberation and the persuasion and so many other things!  And now we have this e-portfolio that will display all of our best work.  I think that having this as a freshman is incredibly beneficial.  I know none of us are super-writers and that our work isn’t comparable to theses or dissertations, but what we have done is impressive for freshman in college.  And could prove beneficial to have when applying for jobs or internships!
  4. And of course, our teacher.  It wouldn’t have been the same class without him!  Everyone else I talked to always had something negative to say about their professor.  Billy was always so willing to work with us and accommodate us!

Overall, I am extremely happy with the results of this course.  It was my favorite class of my freshman year.  Thank goodness you all convinced me to stick with it! :)
